Surface Anatomy Assignment 8th November 2012 Lungs The lungs extend from the diaphragm to just slightly superior to the clavicles and lie against the ribs anteriorly and posteriorly. The base of the lung is concave and fits over the convex area of the diaphragm. The narrow superior portion of the lung is called the apex. The medial surface of the lung is called the hilum. The hilus of the lungs is through which the bronchi, pulmonary blood vessels and nerves enter and exit. Anteriorly, they lie at the level of the costal cartilages 3-4, which is at the level of T5-7. The inferior margins of the lungs are: T-6 mid-clavicular line, T-8 at the mid-axilla, and T-10 posteriorly. Each lung is contained and protected within a double-layered membrane called the pleural membrane. The superficial layer, known as the parietal pleura affects the anterior margins of the lungs on either side. On the right, it is deep to the right side of the sternum between the second and fourth costal cartilages inferiolaterally to the level of the deep surface of the sixth right intercostal cartilage. On the left, deep to the sternum near the midline, inferiorly between the levels of costal cartilages 2 and 4, displaced laterally and more obliquely than left side to a point about 3 centimetres lateral to the left sternal edge at the upper margin of the sixth costal cartilage. The space created by the lateral deviation of pleura and lung on the left side is termed the cardiac notch. Heart The heart rests on the diaphragm, near the midline of the thoracic cavity in the mediastinum. An important and readily palpable landmark for the heart is the sternal angle. The sternal angle is the junction between the manubrium and the body of the sternum, and corresponds to the second costal cartilage. The apex of the heart, which is formed by the tip of the left ventricle, rests on the diaphragm at the 5th intercostal space in the midclavicular line, or 8-9 centimetres from the midsternal line. It is important to note that the apex is not the most superior part of of the heart. The lower right corner of the heart is to is found on the right 6th or 7th sternocostal junction. The base of the heart is the most superior portion of the heart and is predominantly retrosternal, located between the 2nd and 3rd costal spaces. Other margins of the heart include the anterior surface, which is deep to the sternum and the ribs, and the interior surface between the apex and and the right border which rests on the diaphragm. Liver The liver is almost completely covered by visceral peritoneum. The greater part of the liver lies under cover of the lower ribs and their cartilages, but in the epigastric fossa it comes in contact with the abdominal wall. The liver resides in the upper right quadrant of the abdominal cavity. The exact position of the liver varies according to the posture of the body. In the erect posture of the adult male, the edge of the liver projects about 1 centimetre below the lower margin of the right costal cartilages, and its inferior margin can often be felt in this situation if the abdominal wall is thin. In the supine position the liver recedes above the margin of the ribs and cannot then be detected by the finger; in the prone position it falls forward and is then generally palpable in a patient with loose and lax abdominal walls. Its position varies with the respiratory movements; during a deep inspiration it descends below the ribs; in expiration it is raised. Pressure from without, as in tight lacing, by compressing the lower part of the chest, displaces the liver considerably, its anterior edge frequently extending as low as the crest of the ilium. Again its position varies greatly with the state of the stomach and intestines; when these are empty the liver descends, when they are distended it is pushed upward. Stomach The stomach is found in the left upper part of the abdominal cavity. The shape of the stomach is constantly undergoing alteration; it is affected by the particular phase of the process of gastric digestion, by the state of the surrounding viscera, and by the amount and character of its contents. Its position also varies with that of the body so that it is difficult to indicate it on the surface with any degree of accuracy. The anterior surface of stomach is related to the left lobe of the liver, the anterior abdominal wall, and the distal transverse colon. The posterior surface of the stomach is related to the left side of the diaphragm, the spleen, the left kidney, and the pancreas. The greater curvature of the stomach starts at the left of the heart and runs from the opening along the left border of the body and the inferior border of the pylorus. The lesser curvature starts at the right of the heart and runs a short distance along the right border of the body and the superior border of the pylorus. (Note: Pylorus is the sphincter through which the stomach communicates with the duodenum. ) Spleen The spleen is located in the left hypochondrium and lies between the 9th and 11th ribs. The superior surface of the spleen is smooth and convex. It conforms to the concave surface of the diaphragm. Small and Large Intestines The coils of the small intestine lie mainly in the umbilical and hypogastric regions. The ascending colon passes upward through the right lumbar region, lateral to the right lateral line. The transverse colon crosses the abdomen on the confines of the umbilical and epigastric regions, its lower border being on a level slightly above the umbilicus, its upper border just below the greater curvature of the stomach. The descending colon courses down through the left lumbar region, lateral to the left lateral line, as far as the iliac crest. Kidneys The paired kidneys are located just above the waist between the peritoneum and the posterior wall of the abdomen. The kidneys sit between the lower levels of the thoracic spine and the upper regions of the lumbar spine. Since thattime the retailing industry of the ski world has been on a steady increase. At the beginning of this decade the increase began to skyrocket. However, skiing was not thereason for the growth. The reason for the dramatic increase in industry sales in the retailworld of skiing was due to snowboarding. By now almost everyone in the country haseither seen a snowboard, ridden one, or knows someone who has. The purpose of thispaper is to discuss what snowboarding is, and to shed some light on the financial aspectsof this new sport. Snowboarding hit the scene in 1972. Jake Burton, at the age of 15, decided thathe had enough of skiing and wanted to do something a little different. With a littleingenuity and some of his dads tools he began working on the first snowboard. Hisproject lasted about three weeks and when he was done he decided to take his inventionto the slopes and she how it worked. This was almos t the end of snowboarding. Everyslope Jake went to denied him access, saying that they only allowed skis on the hills. Jake was a very determined kid and this did not stop him. He began hiking everyback-country trail he could find and he became quite efficient at snowboarding. In the 1980s snowboarding was still not extremely popular and it was very rarefor a resort to allow it on the hills. As the yuppie age ended and the Generation Xersbegan to get into skateboarding, BMX bikes, bungee jumping, and roller blading,snowboarding took off. By 1991 eight-five percent of all ski resorts allowedsnowboarders to share the mountains with skiers. (Gatlin 1993) According to the samearticle over 73% of the people snowboarding in 1991 were under the age of 25. This agegroup typifies Generation X. Along with snowboarding came an entire new image. BradWilson, the marketing director for Big Bear Mountain in southern California summed itup well with this quote: It was kind of like the 1960s all over again, snowboarders dressdifferently, they have different haircuts and they ride on this different-looking boarddown the hill. (Feldman 1995). In an age where being different is normal, snowboarding Jones3just seemed to fit right in to the picture. Now, in 1996 only 3% of ski resorts do not allowsnowboarding. The resorts have realized that if they want to stay in business then cateringto snowboarders is one of the easiest ways. Many resorts have begun to add new trails tothe mountain just to accommodate snowboarding. Most of these extra slopes have hugejumps, half-pipes, tables, trash cans, metal pipes, and even cars for snowboarders to jumpon or over. The most important feature of these special slopes is the fact that skiers arenot allowed on them. The reason that many resorts have added these snowboard parks isbecause of th e problems between skiers and snowboarders. (Feldman) Roger Hauser, the director of Massanutten Ski School, said that there were quite afew reasons the resort added the snowboard only park five years ago. First of all, hesaid the mangers of the mountain were taking a lot of heat from skiers because of all thejumping and tricks the snowboarders were doing on the slopes. He said that when kidsare doing tricks they are going to be falling down, when they fall down people run intothem. So the mountain added the park and now limits snowboarders who want to dotricks to use that slope. The rest of the mountain is still open to snowboarders. Hausersaid that since the park was opened there has been a dramatic decrease in injuries betweenskier and snowboard collisions. How are the principles of Universalizability, Dignity of Persons, and the Kingdom of Ends derived from this Deontological Theory?  The categorical imperative is the concept introduced by E. Kant as a way to evaluate motivations for actions (). Kant stood on the ground that humans determine their actions by the categorical imperative which the philosopher viewed as the commandment of reason to act in certain way. In such a way, people could act morally or immorally (De George 71). While introducing the imperative Kant attempted to increase the objectivity of moral norms and principles and deter from utilitarian perspective on morality, which determined the morality of action by the principle of utility and common good. Instead, the imperative became the concept which admitted the presence of free will in individuals and the commandment of reason as the determinant factor that lead to moral or immoral actions undertaken by h umans. However, Kant went further in the development of his ideas concerning morality of actions and driving forces (De George 75). This is why he introduced the concept of the categorical imperative which was the absolute, unconditional requirement that asserts its requirement in all circumstances both required and justified as an end to itself. In such a way, unlike imperative, which may vary and depend on reasoning of individuals and different circumstances, the categorical imperative is absolute and unconditional that makes its the major criterion of morality that determines the morality of human actions.   At the same time, the concept of categorical imperative is grounded on the universal law or principle of universalizability that means that the categorical imperative is universal in its essence (De George 74). In terms of morality and ethic, this means that the categorical imperative is the core moral law which is unchangeable and unconditional whatever circumstances are. At the same time, the categorical imperative emerged within the framework of the deontological theory which held the premise that the morality of actions of the moral agent was determined by moral norms and principles on the ground of which this action was carried out. In this regard, the dignity of persons and kingdom of ends emerged as a part of the deontological theory and key concepts of this theory. The human dignity was the major value which determined the morality of actions since deontologists believed human dignity to be the major moral value that had to be respected unconditionally. The kingdom of ends rejected the utilitarian perspective implying that the ends justify means. Instead, deontologists insisted on the important of morality of actions and means to reach target ends debunking the superiority of ends over means.2) What is the distinction between causal responsibility and moral responsibility? What are, if any, the excusing conditions for moral responsibility? Wha t role do these excusing conditions play in terms of a) moral responsibility and b) moral accountability?The moral responsibility implies the responsibility of the moral agent for actions the agent carries out or inaction of the moral agent in accordance with one’s moral obligations. In contrast, the causal responsibility implies the responsibility not for the action, as is the case of the moral responsibility, but for the happening itself (De George 92). The moral agent should have the moral cause to act or not to act and causal responsibility implies the responsibility of the moral agent not for his/her actions but for the fact of happening of a sequence of actions triggered by certain cause.The moral responsibility is grounded on the morality of action or inaction that means that actions of individuals or moral agents should match existing moral norms and standards. The moral responsibility is the responsibility of the moral agent to respect existing moral norms and rules (De George 95). In such a situation, excuses to the moral responsibility may occur, when action or inaction of the moral agent had the moral excuse. In this regard, such a moral excuse is determinism which actually frees the moral agent of moral responsibility. In such a way, the moral agent can ignore his/her moral responsibility on the ground of determinism which make his/her actions useless if the outcome was determined by fate, for example. At the same time, if actions of the moral agent are immoral, he/she is considered to be morally accountable, regardless of determinism. Therefore, the excuse of the moral responsibility does not actually work in case of the moral accountability (De George 98). In such a way, the moral accountability should be distinguished from the moral responsibility since the moral accountability does not admit the excuse which is applicable to the moral responsibility. The distinction between moral responsibility and moral accountability is very important because it gives insight into the understanding of the difference in the morality of actions of individuals and their outcomes. Even though individuals can avoid the moral responsibility referring to determinism, they cannot escape from or avoid their moral accountability for their actions. At the same time, the moral responsibility has a considerable impact on actions of moral agents because the moral agent bears in mind moral implications of his/her actions since he/she is morally accountable. On the other hand, the moral agent can always refer to determinism to justify who he/she has failed to exercise his/her moral responsibility and committed immoral acts or admitted that immoral acts have been committed by others. Yes, to clarify that you’re referring to funding that is higher cost, not cost funding that is higher, and assets that are higher earning, not earning assets that are higher, hyphenate in both cases. (Even though â€Å"cost funding† and â€Å"earning assets† are not standing phrases, the hyphens help readers avoid being distracted by reading them that way.) 2. I would have expected some nagging [in this post] about the hyphen; would it not be better to have torch-bearer or torchbearer [in place of â€Å"torch bearer†]? You’re right I used the correct form of torchbearer in my commentary but neglected to notice and note that the tattoo incorrectly styles the word as an open compound. I guess I was distracted. Treatment of various open compounds with a common element aren’t necessarily consistent: One who bears a torch is a torchbearer, but one who bears a standard is a standard-bearer, and one who bears an ensign (essentially the same as a standard) is an ensign bearer. It’s nearly unbearable. 3. Nice list [of reduplicative doublets]. I’m intrigued some of them are hyphenated and some not. I wonder what the deciding factor is for that. Because English has never had a body that regulates standards, inclusion or exclusion of hyphens in such constructions, as in many other language matters, is arbitrarily and inconsistently based on a variety of factors. 4. Given your recent article on possessives, I wanted to write in with a question. There is typically a notice period of thirty, sixty, or ninety days required before an investor is allowed to redeem. How does one state this? I’ve seen it as â€Å"ninety days’ notice† (as if the notice belonged to the ninety days) and â€Å"ninety days notice.† I typically restate it as â€Å"ninety day notice period† to avoid this ambiguity, but then I’m not sure if that should properly be â€Å"ninety-day† or if the dash is not needed. The correct form is â€Å"ninety days’ notice (meaning â€Å"notice of ninety days†). The phrase is written in the genitive case, in which a noun modifies another noun, usually in the form of one noun possessing the other (â€Å"ninety days notice† is common but incorrect). If you continue to use your alternative phrasing, a hyphen should connect ninety and days â€Å"ninety-day notice period† but I recommend â€Å"ninety days’ notice.† 5. It is the perfect genre that will let people to think outside of the box and experience the thrill that will literally knock their socks off.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sorrow is Increased with Knowledge features one of the most authentic and realistic actors and actresses that helped bring the movie into life. Willem DaFoe as Denman Leigh, is specialized in playing the role as the curious scientist and clone since he starred in Spider Man as the green goblin with two different personalities as the foe and the scientist. Thus, he is capable of playing another similar role in this film. DaFoe loves to be a part of suspenseful movies such as Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Shadow of the Vampire, which makes him the perfect character to play the role as the cloning scientist. His sharp-featured with a seductive and serpentine smile allows the audience to see Denman’s frightening and mad character. DaFoe was given the name Denman Leigh since it defines â€Å"dark doctor† which truly reflects the character’s character in the movie. Life is a Gift Essay

Life is a gift. It is an honor; a spark; an excitement. We all have a world of our own. A wise author, Albert Camus, once stated, â€Å"you will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life† (Albert Camus). Life is about living to your fullest abilities; why waste our time looking for the meaning of each breath we take? Each person is a part of life. Each life has a world of its own. I believe that the meaning of life, defined by Victor E. Frankl, is to find meaning in our own life. Each and every person on this planet has a meaning to his own life, and is a unique and independent individual. And so, the question comes along, â€Å"Who am I? † The answer is I. I am who I am, and not one person can ever change that. My life is exceedingly meaningful, and is made up of a series of rituals, experiences, a plentiful amount of mistakes, and many various emotions. According to the article, The Rite of Passage, a ritual â€Å"help[s] us understand the changes in our lives and give meaning to experiences† we undergo. Rituals express who we are today, as well as the sum total of our actions, feelings, and thoughts that makes each person in this world, a single, individual person. An example of a major ritual and life-changing event in the Odyssey is the trial of the bow. During this scene, a disguised Odysseus surpassed a difficult task, as he without effort strung the challenging bow. Odysseus, after laying the arrow on the arch, shot the mighty bow â€Å"with careful aim, not miss[ing] an axe’s ring from first to last† (Homer 2011). This scene makes a change in not only Odysseus’s life, but also his son, Telemachus, and his wife, Penelope. The trial of the bow is an important Rite of Passage, offering significance to each one of their lives. Just like Odysseus, I have progressed through a numerous amount of rituals, along with experiences, mistakes, truths and actions, all leading up to the fourteen year old girl I am today. Although each person has a different opinion on what surrounds us, I believe the nature of the universe is full of the unknown. The world is a scary place to be in, it encloses us in, with nothing but mystery. It is a frightening thing, to move on with your life not knowing what will happen in the next few moments, but that is what life is all about; the unknown. We surround ourselves with questions that can never be answered; yet we need to learn to live life in the present, not thinking about the future with every step we take. No one in this world is fearless, in fact, according to H. L. Mencken, â€Å"The one permanent emotion of the inferior man is fear – fear of the unknown, the complex, the inexplicable. What he wants above everything else is safety† (H. L. Mencken). In agreement to Mencken, nothing in this world is safe; we waste seconds; minutes; hours; even days worrying about our fears. Worrying about our fears of the unknown. I believe we can’t relate to this unknown universe, however, we can live with it. Instead of waking up each day wondering what the unknown is, we need to wake up everyday focusing on what we do know, and interpreting that information into what we understand. In order to find the meaning in our lives, we each need control over our lives. I control my life one hundred percent. I make me own decisions, choose my individual actions, and control my responses. We have complete control over our own lives. However, the one think we do not have control over is other people’s actions and decisions. Although we have the power in our individual lives, others may influence our judgments, choices, and conclusions. All of these factors affect whom we are, along with the fact that we can’t control others reactions, which may cause poor influence on us. For example, in the novel, The Odyssey, Odysseus sails a long journey home, facing many distractions, challenges, and adventures. He encounters many different monsters that stop him in his path, including Cyclops, The Sirens, and Poseidon. Although Odysseus can control his actions, and the way he fights, he has a weakness when it comes to his opponents. Just like Odysseus, we can control our actions and responses, but when it comes to having others involves, we have no control over how they can act and make their choices. Living life freely, with no regrets, and accomplishing all of our goals. That is a satisfying life. Taking risks, without worrying, loving ourselves, being happy with our achievements, and experiencing all different emotions is what life is all about. A variety of different feelings occur throughout our lives; we need happiness, excitement, fears, anger, and even tears to lead a fulfilling life. In the independent reading novel, entitled Speak; Melinda Sordino writes about emotions and feelings, â€Å"When people don’t express themselves, they die one piece at a time† (Anderson 58). Melinda believes the reasons people need to express themselves is because everyone needs to experience all kinds of emotions in order to interact and stay alive. In the Odyssey, Both Odysseus and Telemachus are involved by an overwhelming amount of emotions. Without the emphasis of their feelings without the novel, the story would have much less meaning and would not be as dramatic. Emotions add to our everyday conversations and feelings towards each other. We need them to live a satisfying, enjoyable life. I believe, in order to find the meaning of my life, I need to sit back, relax, and let the question answer itself. In order to survive, and live for as long as possible, I have to enjoy my life in the present. Not be thinking about the future, and where life is going to take me; but live life as it is brought to me, rather then bringing myself to my life. By being patient and letting my life come to me as time goes on, I am sure to survive for a longer, happier, and more exciting period of time. Yet, at the conclusion to each person’s life, the certainty of death must strike. Getting ourselves ready for this unpredictable day is very easy, as long as we’ve accomplished everything that we have set out to achieve, death may appear whenever it feels the need to. It is a misfortunate thing, though, as some deaths develop so quickly and suddenly, we do not have time to say our goodbyes. Nor do the victims have time to achieve their goals, and pass on wishes. An example of a sudden death is in the novel entitles Lost for Words, by Alice Kuipers. In the story, Sophie’s older sister died traumatically in a sudden train bombing. Due to the death, it ripped Sophie’s family apart. They stopped talking to each other, and everything became awkward between her and her mother. Because of the unpredictable death at such a young age, her sister was, sorrowfully, not ready for her time to come. She may have not achieved her goals in life, and got to take as many risks as life leads her too, making it an even bigger tragedy for Sophie and her family. There were a number of dreadful deaths in the Odyssey as well. These included Odysseus’ crew, Odysseus’ mother, and many suitors. From reading all of these disastrous scenes and stories about death, I have learned that in order to reconcile myself for the inevitability of death, I need to start living my life with many risks, and no regrets. By living my life without any doubts, and enjoying my life in the present, I can be sure to live a long, satisfying life, ready for the fate of death for whenever it decides to doom on me. I believe the meaning of life, is to find meaning in our own, individual lives. By waiting for life to come to me, and enjoying the present in a way of happiness, enjoyment, and risks, I can be sure to eventually come to a full understanding of why I am here, living today. Each life has a world of its own, and each person his own life. Each person in this world will have a different story to share, and a different meaning and impact on our world today.
